My Favorite Chest Exercise…Negative Push Ups

In all of my boot camps I ever ran I never let women do “Girl” push ups because I thought it was a waist of time.  If you really want to get stronger you need to let your body handle your body weight.

Negative Push Ups allow you to handle your body weight on the way down.  Done correctly this style Push Up will get you stronger in a hurry and develop your chest, shoulders and triceps much faster then “Girl” push ups.

  1. Yeah man, I also use this successfully with my girls.

Another trick I use to get them to quickly start doing numerous repetitions of real pushups is to do partial reps.

It’s the same idea the power lifters use with the board press.

I stack a bunch of books and have the girl lower herself only partially until her chest touches the books. This way even if she cannot lower herself all the way down and press up, she will be able to lower herself lets say 5 inches.

Now, once the girl is able to do a real full range pushup, I still use the trick.

This time we start with full range pushups and once she cannot get any more, I start adding books below her chest.

    So it goes like this:

A few full pushups, then add a bunch of books, do a few more partial pushups, add a bunch of books, do a few more, etc.

    Yavor

  2. Rocco-
I’m going to have to try this at Fitcamp. Thanks for the hot tip! :)

  3. Thanks for the demonstration. I’ve been trying to learn to do a real push up for some time now but can never get myself back up so either I don’t go down very far or I do them on my knees. I’m sure this will help me get to doing real push ups much sooner. Thanks.
